The sun was setting slow today. I had left my apartment about half an hour ago and it didn't take long before the sun decided to disappear on me. I wasn't terribly concerned though. It had been a hot day and I was sure that it would stay warm through the night. The street lamps would give me enough light to see and as long as nobody decided to leap out of an alley and jump me, I would be able to get home okay. I had my earbuds in, drowning out the quiet with Black Veil Brides. Bellvue had been pretty deserted the last few weeks. I suspected that most of the students had gone on vacation or something. Not that I could understand why. It seemed perfectly fine right here to me. It reminded me of the last week of school when all the seniors had been gone. The hallways had been customarily empty and it had thrown all of us for a loop. It was almost sad to see that particular hallway empty.
We probably wouldn't see most of them again. It made me think about how that would be me in a short amount of time. Would anyone know me well enough by then to miss me when I was gone? I sighed heavily, climbing up onto the concrete wall lining the beach. My wallet chain rattled on the pseudo-stone. I was dressed in my typical dark jeans, black t-shirt, and converses. Somehow, the heat wasn't oppressive, even without shorts. I spun my captive hoop ring around my finger. I was contemplating possibly going to visit Jase sometime soon. I hadn't been in Bellvue long but I already missed him. It was odd to live in an apartment by myself after the constant activity of living with Jase. The quiet of the apartment was unnerving. I was sure I would grow used to it, but for the time it kinda put me off.
I leaned forward, resting my elbows on my knees and carefully balancing so I wouldn't fall off my perch on the wall. The waves were calmly lapping at the shore, a sharp contrast to the storms we had been getting last week. I had never seen so much rain in one summer and it made me wonder if I had thrown off some cosmic force by moving out of Jase's house. I smiled crookedly to myself, biting gently at my lower lip. I hoped it was global warming instead.

•◘•◘•◘•◘•◘•◘•◘•◘•◘•◘•◘•◘• The setting sun did nothing to hinder my desire to take a jog. I needed some time to clear my mind after the minor disagreement my mother and I had, had over something as stupid as where one of her big dinner plates went. Leave it to my mother to get all worked up over something as stupid as that.
At one point or another I had zoned out, but when I came back to reality I realized that my jog had taken a turn somewhere that wasn’t customary to my route. I was now running along side the wall that surrounded Haven beach. I was almost half tempted to take a swim, being as there was no one else around, but my idea changed when I saw a figure in dark clothes sitting on the wall ahead. There was a voice in the back of my head saying stop but my legs kept moving. Upon closer inspection it was a familiar face, one that I wanted to stop and see.
“Shannon! Hey what the heck are you doing out here?”
Stopping just beside him I pulled myself up onto the wall without really waiting for him to respond to my greeting.

I hadn't been very active today. I spent most of my day shuffling unpacked boxes around my apartment trying to decide if I really felt like organizing anything today. Turned out that all I accomplished was a rearranging of the dust in the closet. I had even spent some time at the local library trying to write an email to somebody but only succeeded in tapping the space bar a million times with one finger until I gave up. I was halfway excited to go back to school yet at the same time dreading it because I wouldn't know anyone there. It was hard enough adjusting to living on my own. The absence of constant noise was surreal.
My thoughts were interrupted after a short time by the arrival of a visitor. I glanced cautiously through the black fringe around my face just in case it was someone unpleasant coming upon me to cause trouble. I breathed an almost audible sigh of relief when I saw that not only was it not a stalker, but that it was a very good friend of mine. I waved at Izzy in my customary way of simply tipping my hand to the side once. When she asked me what I was doing here, I smiled crookedly before going into a sarcastic tirade. "Well... can't you see? I have this hole in my skull and I've become a zombie. I'm watching the sunset and waiting for a victim so I can spread my diseasedness."
I watched as she sat beside me. I knew the zombie comment would hit a certain chord within her because of the numerous zombie films she had subjected me to. I had not seen many movies at all and very few of the ones I had seen were horror flicks. This had led to a marathon of gore-fest movies that lasted well into the morning. It was not something I was soon to forget.

•◘•◘•◘•◘•◘•◘•◘•◘•◘•◘•◘•◘• “Hey now...you do realize that if you have become a zombie it is my job to make sure that you don’t wander the streets eating the people of this lovely little town...even though I would almost pay to see it myself.....”
I heaved a sigh that could have given someone the idea that I had just come out of some kind of spectacular daydream, which was almost the case. Having lived in this town my whole life, being forced to deal with the same narrow minded people every day had caused me to grow bitter towards most of them, not that I was open with that feeling.
“Maybe I could learn to like a zombie after all...”
I turned my gaze on my friend almost half wondering what kind of zombie Shannon would turn out to be, but the idea turned out to be far to stupid for even me. I was quick to chase it off with potential topic ideas. There was no sense in wasting this chance meeting.
“So how has your team been doing captain?”
Playfully I nudged him with my elbow while I continued to watch for some kind of change in his expression. If he was thinking something I’d like to think the first place it would show would be his big blue eyes. Man how I loved to look into those eyes.

I swung my right foot gently as she spoke. The sun seemed to be hovering right on top of the water. The water reflected it, creating a watercolor palette that would be nearly impossible to recreate with paint and brush. When she was done talking, I tilted my head slightly. "Meh, people wouldn't miss them that much, right?" I laughed quietly at the idea. I knew that people would miss them but it satisfied my rather grumpy side to think otherwise. "You better be liking this zombie 'cause I'd be homeless otherwise. It'd be like those commercials on tv with the sad animals and the depressing music. 'You can make a difference in this zombie's life.' I glanced at her out of one eye, my trademark crooked smile in place.
When the conversation took a turn toward my sports career, I stifled a sarcastic laugh. "Psh, it's summer. Nobody has joined the team yet. They're too busy partying." In all honesty, I had no idea what the people were doing but my guess probably wasn't too far from the truth. "What's going on with that excuse for a "sport" that you participate in?" I knew that the jab at her cheerleading would probably earn me some kind of physical retaliation.
