I walked through the open door of the strange pet shop. The lights were dim and the decor was dark. It was quite a large shop compared to most I had seen. I wasn't even sure why I was here. I didn't intend to get a pet. I walked toward the back of the shop. There were doors with large windows in them and on the other side were the different pets. Behind one particular door was a large community of cats. They had all different breeds, colors, and ages of cats.
I opened the door, being careful to make sure it was closed behind me. One particular kitten had caught my attention. I was white with clear blue eyes. I walked over to it and carefully scooped it up. It was tiny, small enough that I could hold it in one hand. I rubbed the top of its tiny head with a fingertip. It stretched out in my hand, resting comfortably. I could feel its vibrating heartbeat against my fingertips.
"She seems to like you."
The voice startled me and I looked up to see who it was. It was the shopkeeper. His appearance seemed strange to me but I dismissed it. I probably seemed strange to him.
"She's deaf, you know. And very shy. I'm surprised she took a liking to you so quickly."
I nodded and looked down at the little kitten that was now curled up, dozing in my hands. When I looked up again, the shopkeeper was gone. I wondered vaguely how he could come and go so fast without me noticing. I patted the kitten once again gently before placing her on one of the many pillows in the room.
I walked out the door of the shop. I hadn't seen the shopkeeper again and I wondered absentmindedly if I had just imagined it all. I sat on a bench outside the shop, curling my legs under me, so I could rest and think for a moment.
