I gave her a challenging look. "I smashed every mirror in the house the night we left." We had left while out parents were out at a party. It was dark and I had roamed the house finding every mirror and shattering it. It was my way of telling my parents that they no longer controlled me. I held up my right hand, showing her the thin scars that criss-crossed the bottom of my wrist and hand. "I don't like mirrors."

I just stared at him with no particular expression. I really didn’t know what emotion should be holding dominance at this particular moment. So instead I simply held his gaze with my rather empty one hoping he would fill the silence with something that would help me figure out what to say next.

I dropped the look with a sigh, turning my arm to look at it. "They left their scars. These physical ones aren't a problem. It's the emotional ones that Jase and I will have to deal with for the rest of our lives. It's hard to pretend that they couldn't come after us at any time." I'm sure they wouldn't blame Jase for what happened. Instead it would be my fault in some twisted way.

“Well then umm I’d better check the chicken.” I hopped up to attention and walked over to the chicken. It wasn’t quite ready but it was nice to stand over here and get an idea of how to go about this topic next. I punched the start button on the microwave to get the veggies started. “So Shannon…umm how hungry are you?” I looked back to him to get his answer.

I traced patterns on the counter top. "Hungry enough to eat, I suppose." I vaguely wondered if by some amazing girl power she had found out that I hadn't been eating much this week. But then the nearly full refrigerator might be a clue. Jase and I usually ate tons of food and we were always running out. I was too scared to look up so I kept my eyes on the counter in front of me.

I poked at the chicken a little, it was about finished, and so I reached into the cabinet with the plates in it. Just as soon I got the plates onto the counter the microwave sounded off letting me know that the vegetables were done. I looked over at Shannon briefly once after hearing the ding but after that I focused completely on getting the food ready. I served up the vegetables while letting the meat cool for a moment. Once I got it all on the plates I walked them over to where Shannon was sitting. I sat one of the plates in front of him and one in front of myself and instead of digging in like I would have any other night I just stared at Shannon waiting for him to eat some of his food first. “Dinner…”

"Thanks." The staring unnerved me a bit but I picked up the fork and began to eat the first real food I'd had in probably a week. I'd been mostly surviving off of the cranberry juice I kept in my fridge. I put on foot down on a rung on the stool to make sure I stayed balanced. I didn't particularly want to fall off the stool at a time like this.

After I was satisfied with the amount of food he had eaten I started to eat some of my food. I waited some time before speaking, “So…is it edible?” I discontinued my staring and decided instead to watch my food. If there was something to be said I didn’t know what it was.

I bit down on the tines of the fork before speaking. "Definitely better than anything I can make. My dinner the past week has had a more... liquid consistency." I couldn't think of a better way to say it. It sounded strange, like I was some vampire out to kill everyone. I'm sure my neighbors would believe it since they could look out their windows and see me sitting on the balcony at all hours of the night with the moon and a candle as my only source of light.

“Okay then Dracula, I figure it’s time I let you in on something.” I looked up from my food and at him. “As long as I’m here you are going to take better care of yourself or I will do it for you. I don’t want you to think I’m trying to be your mom but it seems I care more about your well being then you do.” I frowned for a moment but turned it into a smile quickly. “So from now on if you need something, anything at all you are to let me know or I will pull it out of you.” With that I took another bite but this time I used more force.

I stared, wide-eyed. "I'm... intimidated." I grinned charmingly. "I will obey your every command, mistress." I winked at her, hoping a fork wouldn't find itself airborne and aimed in my direction. I wasn't quite sure how she would take that comment but I hoped it would be seen in a light-hearted manner.

I tried to keep my facial expression straight and intimidating, but with what he had just said and the smile he chose I could not for the life of me keep from smiling and laughing lightly. “You know what Shannon, you really are something else.” I could see that by making that one comment he had improved not only the overall feeling of the room, but he made me feel better about everything.

I chewed on a fingernail and smiled. "That's nice to know. I'm glad I'm not the generic human being that you see all the time." My hands were still covered in the body art from before. "Y'know, we still have our little project to accomplish." I glanced at the clock on the microwave. It wasn't terribly late yet and we still had plenty of time to work.

In the midst of all that had happened today I had totally spaced on the real reason that we had gone to my house. The realization hit my expression suddenly; in fact if it had been someone sitting here, they might have assumed that I was having an attack of some sort to the brain. “Oh right, sure umm I guess I’ll go change then.” I took a few more bites of my dinner and then shoved off to my room to change.

I leaned on the edge of the island for a second before getting up from my place to find everything I needed. I pulled the paints back out from under my bed and walked into the living room to put them on the coffee table. It was glass top and easiest to clean if the paint dripped. I returned to my room to dig in my closet for one of my work shirts.
