I nodded, leaning against the wall. "Next comes the hard part. Living up to the promises." I grinned; she probably hadn't been thinking about that. "And putting everything back in order at the apartment. I remember when I moved, I found a lot of stuff I had forgotten about completely." I had found old photo albums, some of my earlier artwork, and a bunch of other random stuff.

I groaned and closed my eyes. “I’m sure that I can stay out of trouble…but you’re going to need the help me with my grades.” I put one arm over my eyes so that I could open them and keep the light from the window out of my sight. “Maybe un-packing can wait until tomorrow…” I was so out of energy I would be surprised if I made it to the car once again without falling to the floor for some rest. It didn’t dawn on me how much stuff I really had till I had to pack most of it up.

I walked over to her, shaking my head. "You say tomorrow but tomorrow never comes because at the stroke of midnight tomorrow has become today." I picked up her hand gently. "We better get going. We don't want this to carry on into the twilight hours, do we?" I leaned heavily on one leg, making my stance a bit crooked. My wallet chain jangled quietly at the change in position.

It was as if this magical force came about when Shannon took my hand. When I sat up I felt more like I was floating then forcing my tired body to move. I wasn’t sure if it was a good idea to stand this time for the other reasons the exhaustion. All the same I stood and followed the link of our hands like a lead rope over to Shannon. “How long are you going to do this?”

I looked back over my shoulder at her. "Do what?" I honestly had no idea what she was talking about. I walked toward the door and waited for her, not wanting to be the first to encounter her dad if he decided to make an appearance. The sooner we got back the better. We could get everything unpacked and finally get a chance to rest.

I shook my head to show that it didn’t matter. “Umm never mind Shannon, let’s just get going. I’d like to go home now.” I smiled warmly and stepped ahead so that I could once more begin the race for the door. I didn’t even take a moment to look back. As far as I thought, this house was now my parent’s house and I was headed for home.

I followed her, slightly confused and curious about what she had been talking about before. When we got outside, I pulled my keys out of my pocket and unlocked the car. There were still a few hours of daylight left and I wanted to make the most of them. For some reason, this particular moment felt very significant, as if this particular decision was going to change something irreversibly.

I slid into my seat. I couldn’t wait for the motor to come to life. It was a sign that I was that much closer to my new life. I felt like a real person of my own now that I was getting away from my parents. I wondered momentarily if that’s how Shannon felt when he left his home but never brought it up. The ride back the last time felt longer then any of the others but once we got there I ran into the apartment and wasted no time rock star sliding as far as I could through the door. “Home at last.” I stood up and ran back so that I could meet up with Shannon by tackling him. “Hey there roomie.” I had my arms around his neck it was sort of fun to just hang on him like that once in a while. At least that’s the excuse I fed myself for getting that close.

I grinned and shook my bangs away from my eyes. I leaned back against the closed door, not dislodging her from her hold. I tossed my keys in the basket by the door and reached to the bottom of it, snagging a metal ring on my finger. I spun the spare set of keys on my finger in an almost taunting way. "You're going to be needing these." The keys ceased their spinning, the ring wrapped around my finger tip.

I gasped with excitement and let go so that I could snag the keys from his finger. “Thank you so much!” And in a moment of utter excitement I leaned up on my tiptoes and this time instead of kissing his cheek I pushed my lips to his. It took a moment before I realized what I was actually doing instead of just thinking about it. I allowed myself to fall back on the flats of my feet and stepped away slowly my eyes wide with a hint of horror. My cheeks had shot red and I couldn’t get proper speech out to save my life. “I- I’m so…I’m sorry I didn’t…I mean that wasn’t….”

I stepped closer to her, gently brushing her bangs away from her eyes. I looked into her eyes with a dead serious gaze. "Don't worry about it." I smiled gently, my hand falling to grasp hers. "We'd better get started." Though I may have appeared calm on the outside, I was surprised and- dare I say it- happy that her self control had slipped a little. I had feared for a while that if hers hadn't, mine would have.

I wanted to move but I couldn’t, my feet were cemented where I stood. I looked down to my hand that was once more accompanied by Shannon’s. “Umm Shannon, my feet won’t move…I think this time you may need to lead the way this time.” I looked back up to him and smiled sheepishly my face still red.

I rolled my eyes in mock annoyance. "Fine, jeeze." I walked over to her and picked her up over my shoulder, preventing her from falling by holding the backs of her legs. I walked into the spare bedroom which was filled with boxes and sat her back down on the bed. "Lazy people these days..." I said jokingly, leaning against the wall near the head of the bed.

I sucked in a large breath when he picked me up but made no attempt to fight him. When he set me down on the bed I just stared at him, even as he went about calling me lazy. “Shannon I just want you to know that I really like you…maybe now’s not the time to say that but after what just happened out there I’m not sure how I can deny it any more.” I looked down at my feet and took a firm grip to the side of the bed. “Anyway…now that I’ve said everything that needs to be said what do you say I get off my lazy bum and fix my room up while you take a break or something.” I looked back up to him. “You’ve done so much today I don’t want you to over work yourself.” I stood up and pulled a box onto the spot of the bed where I just was. “I think this lazy-Mary is ready to work.”

I leaned back against the dresser, bracing myself with my hands against the surface. I nodded somberly. "I'm aware. The feeling is reciprocated." I walked into the kitchen and grabbed a bottle of water from the fridge. I returned to the room and placed the bottle in her hand. "Don't worry about me overworking myself. I haven't slept in a week and I'm still okay. I don't think carrying boxes around will hurt me any." I smiled encouragingly. "Besides, I have no intention of sitting around and watching you work."
